Seahorse Spotting better than Train Spotting
Seahorses are fascinating and the more I look at them the more I wonder. I have spent hours under the water looking for these strange creatures, where the father nurtures the eggs and gives birth.
They come in all sizes from the pygmy seahorse at just 10mm in height to ones that can grow to 30cm or more. However, they all seem to be very elusive and I have rarely seen them whilst diving.
It is because of this that Project Seahorse is asking divers for some help.
Project Seahorse is a program that aims to advance marine conversation and to champion sustainable resources using seahorses as its flagship species.
Most seahorses are listed as “threatened” species but data is so sparse that little is known of their actual numbers and status in the wild.
This is where divers can help. project seahorse is asking all divers to report sightings of seahorses and details on how this can be done can be found at Project Seahorse’s website.
Currently there is focus on two seahorse species in European waters, the Black Sea, Mediterranean and Northeastern Atlantic, but all sightings would be well received.
To find out more details of these and other Red List Threatened species go to the IUCN website (International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).
And if you get any photos of these elusive creatures please send them to me for a future gallery project.
